parkrun corner (14 & 21 September 2024)

A 2 week catch up, details for this week’s trip to Bushy and details of the new Whats App group.

BUSHY – This coming Saturday our club trip is a bit more long-distance with a trip to Bushy, the parkrun birthplace. More details here: www.parkrun.org.uk/bushy/course/

Please wear your TRC stripes so that we can easily see each other amongst the 1,000-2,000! and it might be a good idea to share lifts where possible. From the record book John Manning and Mark Tikaram have run there most (both on 3 occasions). Fastest male Josh Frewin (17: 55) and fastest female Verna Burgess (22:14) . 2 records that are likely to go are the fact that the most Tringers on one occasion is currently 5 and as I’m walking on Saturdays rather than running at the moment the max barcode number for TRC might be exceeded (Sally Nash’s 1,532 being the current record – being a walk on the parkrun 14th birthday in 2018)! Hope to see some of you on Saturday.

WhatsApp – We have set up a “TRC parkrunning” WhatsApp group– feel free to join it for the latest TRC parkrun news, sharing lifts, photos from your travels etc. (check your email for the joining link to the TRC community)

Roundup-from last 2 weeks -Furthest travelled were Alison and Chris Bill with their visit to Shingashigawa Ukima in Japan, north of Tokyo. A run beside the Shingashi river in northern Tokyo. First from the club to run there, it was a very hot one at 37 degrees!

TRC did have 4 parkrun countries left to visit but just as Alison and Chris visited Japan, a new one in Lithuania started. So we still have 4 left to visit (Finland, Eswatini, Lithuania and Namibia).

Dennis Raffety was the first of our members to run at South Shields, staying on from the Great North run the previous week. There were also first TRC visits for Emma and Neil Adcock at Bramshall Road, Uttoxeter and Maddi Pendrigh at Alstervorland, along the Alster tributary of the River Elbe in Hamburg.

There were podiums last week for Ben O’Keeffe (1st at Houghton Hall), Lynda Hembury (1st female at Dunstable), Emma Adcock (2nd female at Southall) and Liz O’Keeffe (3rd female at Houghton Hall). Well done to Ben on getting an all-time parkrun PB of 17:36, knocking 25 seconds off his previous PB.

This week we just had Mary Ward, 1st female at Vandeleur in Ireland.A successful Cheddington visit to Church Mead with both Katie and Len van de Linde and Kirsty Dance getting personal course PBs. With Kevin just 3 seconds off his too.

Other course PBs included Jez Wood at South Oxhey, and Mark Tikaram at Church Mead. Whilst Mary may think she has the bragging rights this week in the Ward family for her “1st female”, I think Mike has a good claim with his improved “best barcode” with an improvement from 39th to 14th!

And finally, one of our members, Angelo Lucatello has come up with a novel way to do his parkrun tourism. He sent us this postcard from sunny Great Yarmouth ….“We had a super time in Yarmouth. The perfect weather for running on the beach. It was fun but tough going. The football was very entertaining – Gorleston came back from 2 – 0 down to draw the game. It now goes to a replay at Barking. Wish you were here” Angelo & Ros are combining FA cup football action with parkrun tourism. Starting with Tring FC, they are watching each FA cup round from that part of the draw ie Tring, or whoever beats them, and then each subsequent winner of the teams that beat Tring or their opponent. They are combining this with a visit to the nearest parkrun. So far they have been to Tring and then followed Barking to St Neots and then Goreleston (nr Great Yarmouth). It’s still quite a lot of rounds till we reach Wembley, so we look forward to future updates.
